And let’s not sugarcoat it: schools are not always the calm, nurturing havens we wish they were. For neurodivergent kids, a ringing school bell can feel like a siren signaling impending doom. So, let’s dive into the messy, complicated relationship between anxiety and learning for neurodivergent children. Spoiler: it’s not pretty, but it’s not hopeless either.

Chunking assignments into bite-sized tasks can reduce overwhelm. Instead of asking a student to “write an essay,” try, “Write three ideas for your introduction.”


4. Build Predictability

Unexpected transitions are anxiety’s playground. Use visual schedules or verbal warnings to help kids anticipate what’s coming next.


5. Offer Compassion Over Compliance

Let’s not turn anxious kids into discipline cases. A little understanding goes a long way. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, ask, What support does this child need right now?

Anxiety is a team sport. Parents and teachers need to collaborate to create consistent strategies. Regular communication and tools like IEPs or 504 Plans can ensure everyone’s on the same page.
